Description
British CoinProof, with some scratch impairments. Cameo lustre. Bronze composition. Measures about 26 mm.
Strike-through denticle-lamination, an unusual mint error type. Numismatic collectors strike - made from specially prepared dies.
A denticle lamination followed the first strike (proof coins are double-struck under high pressure). That stray metal was then struck-through, squashed, leaving a pancake indent in the field near the laminated denticle on the second strike. A strike through occurs when a foreign object, usually lint or wire (from cloths or wire brushes that are used to prepare the dies) is still between the die and planchet when the coin is minted, leaving an impression of the foreign object in the surface of the coin.
