British Antarctic Territory 2019 Adelie Penguin 50p Cupro Nickel Coloured Coin
Penguins are the most common birds in the Antarctic with some colonies having populations that are larger than some cities. They survive in exceptionally harsh conditions but the penguin is high evolved to be able to live in the coldest of places. To be able to withstand the endless hours standing on the ice, the blood flow to the penguins feet is tightly controlled, reducing the flow in the extremely cold environment. It is therefore no wonder that the Penguin is often recognised as the emblem of Antarctica.
Adelies are truly Antarctic penguins, restricted to Antarctic waters. They have a black back and head with a white front giving the appearance of miniature men in evening attire. Though one of the smallest species, these penguins definitely have an attitude and are known to attack visiting scientists with their flippers. Found all around the Antarctic continent on ice-free slopes and islands, they are often far from open water.
The design on the coin itself features a pair of Adelie penguins. The Pobjoy Mint exclusive Effigy of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin. The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with the penguins portrayed in colour. A special colour album, which is sold separately, has been designed to house all five coins.
